Hi Everyone, I've seen some pretty out there questions answered here so here goes.

I was recording a video onto a SD card using a portable DVR and a home made underwater camera, for some reason the recording stopped abruplty, power supply or whatever.

Anyways, normally the video saves as a ASF file this time it is a AXF I can view its contents using a utility program that I use, windows commander, but nothing else will open it. I know the vision is there but can't access it in the normal way. Its a big file 825mb so I cant open it in notepad.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Please

KK I don't really have a clue but try renaming the file type, my thinking is the file would be same same just different extention, just an idea.

I tried that Bob, unfortunately it didn't work.

I think there needs to be some sort of a closing statement at the end of the file, but I don't know how to achieve it

There was a little program around that "fixed" corrupted GoPro files... can't remember the name and it's not on this PC but you should be able to find it in a search on the goprouser forum.

Gee I'm nice: www.tapatalk.com/groups/goprouser/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=1013

Looks tricky but isn't. Lost the audio on the files I recovered but that's ok...

3 options
1. try kami's software/Google other vid recovery software, try different ones
2. pay someone.. Data recovery
3. Go old school. Get hex editor that will open file. Figure out structure. Copy file header/tail sections from working file.

I will start with trying Kamikuza's one to start with, I've tried a few before coming here to ask the question.

There is one called digifix that NOD32 (my virus program) doesn't want me to download, I get a lot of hits on it but am unsure.

I'm old, and went to skool two, but can you recommend a hex editor that will open 825mb files and allow you to cut and paste?

Mine won't, but I haven't searched for one either

Let us know how it went with the fix.
For some formats, the file header has to be updated with final info & closed, else the file will be deemed invalid.
Good luck.

Thanks guys, I've got it working now.

Kami your file couldn't find anything but I got it to run. It was tricky last night with beer in system but no problems this morning.

In the end I downloaded a file splitter and broke it up into 1mb files, I then got a copy of a working file of similar size and split that one too. Replaced the first 1mb and the last 1mb of the corrupt file with the good ones and it has recovered most of my footage.

I did try to use a small file, as the donor, it worked but only showed the very first part of my corrupt video, so a donor file of similar size was required.

Well done. So it was the header and not the trailer the problem, right ?

I did both, didn't really try anything else after it worked
