Moving to a new house, I want a board that's

Super stable for an old fella with snappy bones
solid, handles 100kg+
maybe bigger wheels to handle some rough stuff / grass ? (good idea?)

Mainly to get around the new neighborhood, it's pretty flat and I could go to shops, park, surf club, pub even

My boy has a 3 wheel scooter and I was thinking of getting the adults one... I'm sure it's not very cool with the skater crowd but it looks alright to me, bit pricey maybe...

Anyone know a good one?

I've got myself one of these longboards. Fantastic to cruise around on, they just keep rolling. Kids ride their bikes while I skate.

I've got a 'Loaded Tan Tien' longboard and it is the best board i've ever ridden. Make sure you get good bearings, makes a world of difference.

Cheers

Oooh...!
On a quick 25km bicycle ride from Mt Victoria to Lithgow last week, we met a guy walking up Browns Gap Rd.
The Gap road gains about 100m in 1300m of road. Has been downgraded from 100km/h to 80km/h recently.

He had ridden this road on a longboard that cost him about $300. Something-'8' brand ? This not-so-young guy said he hits between 60 and 70km/h

Pardon my dumbness, but how do you brake?
What happens if you hit a 2cm bit of bluestone lifted from the bitumen?
What does adding a 10mm spacer 'in the trucks', do?

Brakes??

Putting a spacer in gives you more wheel travel so the wheel dosnt hit/bite the deck and throw you off

i found it through google but this is the shop.
works a treat and would not be that hard to make..
where the bolt come through the beck on the under side i have add a bit of retic pipe so the bolt is only a little bit through the deck and right back against the rear trucks.
Saved my arse going down the roads from the top of the hill down to Middleton beach in Albany had smelly shorts after that.

^^ nice link. That guy has some cheapies.

Knowing absolutely nothing about skateboards, I like this style:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vault-42-Dropcarve-Bamboo-Fibreglass-Deck-7-R-K-Trucks-Ceramic-Bearings/121128466526?ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1&ih=002&category=16264&cmd=ViewItem

This one has 45 mins to go and it's at 20 bucks! Probably going to shoot up to 80 in the last 2 minutes I guess.

That brake is here:
www.longboardshop.de/shop/product_info.php?cPath=62_213&products_id=2158
It looks good, but a bit pricey. I guess it'd be worthy if you live in a hilly area or commute.

I have both of these - the fish is good for general cruising and curb carving, the drop deck is better for hills. My 15yo also has the Athena and can do some big power slides on it... and uses it to commute locally. I've purchased 4 boards off these guys and the quality and service are very good.

...oh, and I am 46yo and 112kg

Yep - kb Dave I have a vault as you posted. Suits me just fine, although I replaced the bearings with ceramics (it didn't come with them when I bought it). Happy to let you borrow it if you didn't move too far! My next borad will be drop deck - saves the old blokes legs when kicking along (although I mostly use mine with a stick).

I've got a Sector 9. Don't know the model, but it's about a meter long, though it comes in longer and shorter versions, has wild flex and soaks up the ruts and roughness of a daily street skate with my boys. Check out anywhere that stocks S9.

The first method to learn is foot braking. Put the sole of the shoe you push with flat on the ground and use it to slow yourself down. Works good at low speed, takes skill at high speed.

The next method is the Coleman Slide, for this you need slide gloves. Plenty of vids out there. You crouch down on the board, put your front hand on the ground and slide the board around 180 degrees. Washes off speed very quickly.

From there you open up all sorts of options of stand up slides and speed checks similar to snowboarding.

The golden rules to start with though are don't go faster than you can stop from, and wear protection!

You eat it!

Anyone know about this thing? Looks pretty forgiving, low ride and big wheels so it's less likely to hit something and stop under you.

These look interesting ? Better as a down hill i would say as pushing can be fun if you're not paying atten and have big open wheels

Hey Dave,

I got one of these a couple of years back, and its a great board - done some great hill bombs on it and it goes well, and also is ok to cruise on.

But if you feel like something a little different there are some fun looking boards with surfing tail pads on them that could be worth a whorl...

PS Try to avoid a cheap-ass longboard - you get what you pay for

Direct shop here, $200 new inc postage.
http://shop.goeasyonline.com.au/store/skateboard-onda-longboard.html

The VIBE model I linked earlier only handles 75kg, the CORE model as above handles 120kg odd.

Definitely another option that's not cool with the cool kids. There a thread out there with a whole lot of SF skaters bashing it who never tried it but hey it's not bamboo and I can't "paint thane" with them shopping cart wheels man.

There are others like this dude who ride and sell every type of board and reckon it's pretty good (read at bottom)

Those boards look pretty tech Dave.... you sure you don't want something a little more "classic"?

I mean, if you had one of those gyroscopic beasts I'd be expecting you to strap your nuts on and bomb some scary looking hills.......

At least with the classic longboard you can still ride from A to B without having to justify why you are not overtaking cars (although you can still do it on the Globe Bamboo - if you are ever in Auckland I can show you a sahweeeeet 3km downhill through the city, overtaking cars etc on the way to the pubs at the bottom of the hill)

Does this make your nuts shrivel up?

You got me interested with that onda board, you can get them online via ebay at 109.99 free delivery (auction)

Might grab one for the son.... (I'm no good on a skateboard...)
He checked it on internet and found a video where the wheel spins freely for over 2.30 mins

That was a cool vid. Never gonna be me out there dicing with trucks. I'm way too old for that stuff now.

All I want is something easy, stable, good on the knees, carry some roll over pavement cracks, sandy patch, detour onto grass, etc. I will be using a lot along a walkway beside the ocean, a lot of those little 1-2cm prickly ball things from a she-oak tree maybe? that would be almost big enough to stall a small skatie wheel. I really want it for commuting round the local area, I don't have a bike and I'd prefer to spend the money on a board instead. I want to be able to carry a bag of shopping or maybe a board or backpack of beach gear and not worry about coming off.

I'm not sure, I like the classic style, particularly a drop-thru with drop deck, biggest wheels available -76mm?- and widest trucks - is that 180mm plus spacers?

when you get it fit a sail windskating is heaps of fun & im 49 & I do it whenever I can in fact latly far more than windsurfing I just cant get enough time to travel to water but netball courts are down the street . I did put big wheels on for glass just crushes it & with the sail driving you you don't tend to get stoped by gravel etc I just have to watch out for poles I nearly hit one a while ago when a girl was practicing netball had a shot & her tits feel I should have been watching were I was going I suppose instead of watching her struggle to put them back in & it happened twice then she went & changed wind dropped off I went home with a smile

Get a set off 75mm big zigs from abec11 78 duro then whack some bones reds in them. Trucks on longboards I prefer reverse king pin variety such as randall or Paris, there are other brands just as good out there depending on what fan boy you listen to. Decks are probably the least of your worries if your just cruising boardwalks. So choose what you like, make sure it has wheel cutouts if buy big zigs or a mouthguard at least. You can even buy a blank deck,.a.few.cans of ironlak from boardshopaustralia and paint it yourself.
