Hi
I'm trying to improve the sounds in my Commodore, and have a new set of speakers and an amp coming.
My question is, does it make much difference putting Dynamat inside the doors, is it worth the speaker kits as opposed to doing the whole doors.
Will it improve the base much if I put Dynamat on the inside and outside skins.
Also is there any cheeper products that do the same thing?
Cheers
Dynamat works,
Not only does it keep the outside noise out it also aids the speaker by giving it a better accoustic enviroment to work in.
My car is alot quieter place to be in and doesnt need the volume up as loud.
Sounds alot better and well worth the bucks.
Not alot of options that I know of that dont absorb moisture or go mouldy.
Cheers
Dont want to hi jack thread Juice, but while we're talking car stereo's.........
Why do some CD's play in my old Prado, and some nothin', zip, ERR1!
What is the best way to clean a car CD player, tried the old compressor blow out/in!! probably not the answer right?
Thanks
there are cheaper versions of dynamat but none are as clean to use. More important is better baffles (not the stock plastic crap), replacing the wiring which aint so easy dependent on model. I'd dynamat or skin boot lid then leave it at that. You are never going to get excellent sound in a commodore & is often a waste of money. If you're that way inclined & have invested in $500+ focals/hertz/jl's then dynamat away to get the best quality you can out of them.
You will be amazed the difference in sound quality just changing the head unit & speakers does in a commodore.
Yes, it's worth doing.
I use the sheets of foil backed bitumen sheets that Jaycar used to sell. I stick on the inside surface of both the outer skin and inner skin. It's very easy to apply, you just press them on and they stick. Also pull out the back seats, and put them on the wheel arches, and other bar metal surface I can see.
Then you should cut out sheets of MDF to block all the service holes in the inner door skin.
Lastly, I pull out the carpet, and lay 3/4 inch thick felt over the entire floor of the cabin, then re-install carpet and seats.
I've given people a lift in my car, and without them knowing what I've done, they've commented on how quiet it is inside the car.
Tweeter placement can be critical. I had my tweeters on long lengths of cable and stuck them on with blu-tack, trying several locations before finding the optimal location and securing them permanently.
I watched a TV show on the Rolls Royce factory recently, and basically their sound proofing was almost exactly what I've done. ![]()
Lol commodore be careful of boot rattle
Lol yeah but fords are no better [pi/i6l55rm6345434rv32ewce1, Eff man that hurt, what, ? and you reckon it aint broken, feels broken to me.
I have a large eastern suburbs gentleman staying with me at the mo, (not a great deal you can do about that when it turns up on your doorstep).
And has been explicitly explaining to me for the previous hour or so, that ford has never put out a bad car, he backs this argument up with the fact that when he was last in Bali, he could find ford jackets everywhere and never once spotted a holden jacket.
I best click "post my reply" button soon cause if this dude pops an eye open soon an seas what I've written, well, I think my loose jaw may be the least of my problems
Has old mate not heard of the ford taurus and the AU falcon?? 2 of the worst cars ever made ![]()
Mind you I always had a soft spot for the T series. They always sounded pretty tough

Hey pm me if you want his mob # . Then you can try and explain it to him. Probly best that you two don't meet each other for a while after you've had that conversation
No the dynamatt will not increase the bass at all ever . . .what it does do is stop the panel from resonating and reduce road noise
it will not put your speaker in a better acoustic environment that is dynasorb
dynamat will improve the overall audio experience by improving (reducing) the background noise
have it in my commodore and i have fitted it to many customers cars
. . . . you need to cover about two thirds of any panel to be 100% effective - If you are on a budget then placing patches directly behind the speakers will make a considerable difference and you can add to that latter if you like.
It is usually cheaper to just buy a small pack of dynamat rather than the speaker pack (per square foot/meter)
. . . . .wipe the surface clean with meths first to ensure good adhesion you do not want to end up with a melted pile at the bottom of your doors after hot weather (happens more than you think people stick it to the dust layer instead)
as others have already stated the cheaper products are not as effective, they work but you get what you pay for
Also if you're getting splits for the front end of the commodore take of the panels at each end of the dash and place the crosovers in through there to reduce any chance of induced engine noise.
tip- if your mounting the tweeters in the factory position then at the crossover set the titanium ones at -3db fabric ones to 0db/+3db
one cheap way to improve the sound from your speakers is to source wooden speaker mounts to replace the plastic ones mdf is fine and most audio shops will have them readily available for commodores
oh yeah +1 to what Harrow said all good info
^ what he said.
when i dynamated & re-insulated my previous rx7 it had the odd effect of making the deepest engine/exhaust notes stay in the cabin, not what i expected.
Thats awesome, thanks for all the advice.
Im going to have to stick with the standard head unit as its got the IQ system and is all tied in together.
I'll get the bulk pack of dynamat and after doing the doors ill have some left over.
I've got splits for the front so the tweeters are going where the stock pretend tweeters are.
Was thinking of making mdf mounts anyway as the fronts are 17cm and a bit bigger than the stock ones, but I'll do it for the rears also.
Just hope the sound out of the IQ system is up to it
Hey VB Man, does your Ford loving live in, want my old Cougar. (Im talking about my car not my ex.) Actually if he takes one he can have the other for free. Its been around the block a few times, high mileage, temperamental, noisy, prone to breakdowns and looks a bit tiered. The fords good though. ![]()
I've been wondering how people do an aftermarket install with a new car. The new integrated dash systems don't really give you a simple clean install option. All I can figure is that you'd leave the factory unit alone and have do a complete 2nd install somewhere in the cabin, under the dash I'm guessing?
