hey guys,

I'm studying engineering at uni and trying to come up with a final year project to do.
I'm kind of keen to make a hydrofoil board (like in the link) for surfing or maybe kiting but I can't really just make it - I need a purpose or aim for it.
Anyone have any ideas??
Basically Im trying to find a way I can go surfing or kiting for uni

Cheers

What sort of engineering? Aerospace/Mechanical (make weapons), Civil (make targets), Chemical etc?

you should build a 30ft to 40ft long wakeboard slider what will fold up to fit into a 6x4 trailer now that would be cool

Nope, that's your job.

Seriously, those ideas have been taken - how about dazzling your teachers/lecturers by coming up with a new idea, or at least implementing an existing idea but for a new purpose - that's the best way to really be involved in your work & not just use your knowledge to create a way to 'bludge' through your schooling. It has been said many times before, but the real genious & challenge is in "thinking outside the box" - do this well and the world will open up for you!

(gawd, I sound like an old lecturer there, sorry).

Good luck with it.

Low drag, wind powered transportation.

The following is not really a hydrafoil, but has similar engineering principles...

Two problems.
1. Foils are difficult to learn to ride
2. They're big and bulky and fragile.

1. Design an automatic self-trimming foil like yachts have

2. Design a foil that works but is small enough, or folds up, so you can get it inside a normal car. Any dis-assembly has to be quick and easy.

In both cases it has to be simple and robust enough to be used on a kiteboard.

I agree with the above,

If you can think of an idea in less than a few minutes it probably has already been done. Take your time and explore options. If you can modify to suit a needy area go for it. Engineers build for the future, think of something that will still be used in say the next 30yrs, that's when you know you are on to something good.

Good luck and stay focused.

Doing mechanical (although theres more to it than making weapons )

I am trying to make something myself, just having a little trouble so thought I'd give it a crack on here for some inspiration - haven't put away the textas and butchers paper yet though. The project doesn't necessarily have to be something that hasn't been done before - itll all be new to me!

Thanks for the help guys

I disagree. The formulation of an idea for something that hasn't been done before happens quite quickly. The 'lightbulb moment', the 'Eureka' (Archimedes working out how to measure volume of a solid).

It's the years and decades of experience, specialisation, and professional development as an engineer that will tell you if it's an original idea or not. They also help with the...

Sounds like you have an agenda? Possibly encouraging a young engineer to come up with a new watersport?

(kiting not doing it for ya?)

What about revisiting low drag surfaces.

There was a link posted the other day to a New Scientist article about imaging dna. In it they attributed their success to the use of a surface of "nano poles" that was extremely water repellant.

Topic: Low friction surfaces and their effects on watersports.

1. Tow testing of various surfaces, angles of attack. surface roughnesses etc. (surfboards, windsurfers, kite boards, wakeboards)
2. in field testing of those surfaces (eg surf trips).
Done- 4 watersports in one project, should get you heaps of time on the water.

i used to be quite a good airchair/ skyski water skier, who modified and tuned my own foils. I also kite and windsurf.
foils would suck with kiting or windsurfing because with a foil you need to balance (like balancing a chair on two legs). combine that with having to adjust kite/ sails and it just makes it unworkable. Before someone puts up youtube vids of it being done (I have seen them) have a look closely. it's actually as ghey as aids.
They cant do anything. also foils like the skyski (above) have a working speed that they dont like to go over.

why dont you do something that will actuallyhelp your career? fair enough if you develop a new water sport you might make money but employers won't like it much. Id be kiting in my spare time and doing a project on something that would help with my future employment.

Indeed I tought about hydrofoils long time ago.
But they could not be used for our favourite sports unfortunately,
Good hydrofoils equal guillotine.
If our fin is not enough then hydrofoil will be real killer device,
If that was possible we had already titanium fins.

That is actually quite possible. Superconducting coil in the board, will repeal water and you could hover above.

It's only 2012 and already
STARBOARD make a complete range of hoverboards and
SEVERNE have the lightest jet propulsion packs in this time space continuum. Great presents for Christmas!

I have way more control of my hoverboard than Marty had on his board 3 years from now in 2015

Or invent a sport that is not limited by dangling under the power source and thus needing artificially constructed sliders to add to the limited repertoire.

Oh hang on, there was one in the late 70's that doesn't need stuff like that, and it is still going today......
