Too true Simondo, Mrs Mackeral spends $350 at least each week on food shopping!! The bit that gets me is when I see her throwing out all the unopened items that have been in the fridge going off and replacing them with the ones she just bought from Coles. I swear I should own a third of that company by now!! But alas, she is a supurb cook and I wouldn't have it any other way....

That is a bit excessive but I've noticed how much the Woolies bill has gone up in the last few years... Can't blame the missus really... blame the Duopoly

there was a good discussion recently to get rid of either the best before date or the use by date as there is lots of perfectly good food thrown out because of the presumed date is past and its straight in the bin whilst still being edible, back in the old days it would all be done by the smell test....my family say I am past the used by date or maybe I just smell?

We average $120 a fortnight including fresh fruit and veges (for two adults and a 7 year old every now and again)., but I think I'm pretty savvy when it comes to using 'random' assortments of food in the pantry.

Considering I'm a coeliac (aka Gluten free) not by choice, we eat a lot of rice based food including making our own sushi, and are growing:

-corn
-snow peas
-lettuce
-baby yellow tomatos
-large red tomatos
-silverbeet
-corn
-strawberries
-lemon
-lime
-carrots
-chilli
-basil
-eschallots
-parsley

Today

Mrs Piranha is a very astute shopper too. We have a vege patch, not overly comprehensive yet, but growing (pun intended), and a few fruit trees. We catch fish and I hunt too (rabbits and 'roos). Only we 2 ol' farts at home now with a typical weekly food shopping bill around $30 to $40. It also helps to live in a rural area and have farming friends.

Great garden Elizabeth, we are bit slack really... I bet we could save heaps by growing a decent veggie garden as that seems to make up alot of the bill!

I only have chilli's and parsley (staples for my famous chilli mussels) at the moment.

I have been looking at starting an aquaponics set up. Anyone into this? Looks like a great way to grow some veggies / yabbies / trout and also give the daughters a bit of education. Kinda like a Dad / Kids project.
