I ..................am signing this petition to acknowledge my desire that whaling, in any form, as well as the hunting of whales and dolphins, be stopped immediately. I will boycott Japan, and all Japanese products, until this practice ceases

://

Whales and dolphins are mammals and undergo excruciating pain.
How can the global community expect people like this to climate change when clearly they cant even resolve a simple inhumane practice like this.

**** Japan
**** there rice burning cars and there products.
toyota?

Cows, sheep and pigs are mammals too. What about them?

Instead of boycotting Japan why not contact your local MP and ask them to ask the federal government to do something about the Japanese whalers. As far as I can see Garrett has been pretty pissweak about standing up to the whalers.

In regards to the dolphins being massacred in Japan, not much Australia can do that. We can lecture them but the Japanese would counter saying millions of kangaroos are hunted and killed in Australia so when it comes to animal welfare Australia doesn't stand on the moral high ground. There was the issue of sheep mulesing too.

You can boycott the Japanese but if they boycott Australia in return our economy would be stuffed. If we are going to boycott trade with foreign countries due to cruelty to animals we may as well shut up shop coz the Chinese and Koreans are just as bad and possibly worse.

Or are whales, dolphins and other cetaceans more than mere animals?

as long as its sustainable then i don't see a problem with hunting whales and dolphins for food. you can't single out species for protection on the basis of them being "mammals" or "intelligent" or "majestic", thats just childish.

overfishing of tuna and some shark species is a far bigger problem than whaling in terms of ecological impact on the seas.

so unless you are a vegan, don't be jumping up and down about the fishing practices of other nations.

What fishing practices- their whale culls are done on the guise of scientific research. Boycotting Japanese products is stupid (ie how many people does Toyota Aust. provide work for?) when the real problem is the world governments dont have the balls to go in and say enough is enough.

The government should just pay some top world scientist to release a report saying that whale meat will make your eye;s go swinty and your balls will shrink.

During the second world war, Japanese intell' intercepted what they initially thought to be encrypted radio communications eminating from the south china and antartic seas.

using their newly developed and highly sophisticated rice burning triangulation methods, they were able to deduce that the signal was a two way communication stream and that the origin of the return signal seemed to be coming from the, at the time, only recently discovered and still little known 23rd moon of saturn, coincidently and mysteriously named 'whaldolf'.

being the cluey alien hybrid buggers that they are, the japanese were able to quickly and inexpensively develop an electronic rice burning translation meduim machine.

when the machine was activated, the japanese discovered that the communications were between reconnaissance patrols on this planet and their headquaters on whaldolf.

the communications were further decifered and translated and to the japanese rice burning horror, it was discovered that the communications were coming from an allegiance between whales and dolphins, and they were preparing for an all conquering attack!

apparently whales and dolphins are aliens to this planet and they have been watching us for eons, studing the climate and observing the accelerating cycles of the sun, waiting for the tipping point of global warming to give them an oceanic advantage, where upon they will advance their attack from the seas and the skies, destroying and enslaving humanity.

they plan on wiping most of us out, farming us and canning us for export and preserved consumption; training us to perform tricks for their amusement and keeping us in tiny pens so as their tourists from whaldolf can be photographed with us.

the japanese first discovered this during the second world war. when they took their findings and their technological rice burning doo-dads to the newly created united nations, they were laughed out of the building...

... so ever since they have been fighting for the silent truth, the continuation of a soveriegn planet and its ignorant inhabitants.

and they carry on this fight, this war of the worlds, ridiculed and alone....

Wasnt it the lack of trading and spending etc, which brought this recession upon us? Over in west aus, alot of the mines were temporally shut down as they were too far ahead on there mined ores, which leads back to the consumer spending.

From what I've read, Japanese traditionally did not eat sea mammals except in a few seaside villages. The market for sea mammal meats developed after World War Two where whale meat was seen as a cheap form of protein.

Similarly the Japanese didn't eat much tuna until after the second world war. The Japanese saw American occupational forces eating beef and wanted to copy them. However there was no beef available. So they started eating more red meat fish, primarily tuna. Before this red meat fish was cheap and most Japanese preferred to eat white flesh fish.

I'm not sure on this. Is this right?

Whales and dolphins are definitely clever. But so are african children.
Their numbers are dropping as I understand it. But so is the food that they eat (because we eat a lot of it ourselves)
Whale meat isn't actually much of a delicacy in Japan - they try to talk kids into liking it at school. But they're not apparently hunting whale meat in order to eat it.
Boycotting Japanese goods would make a difference if it (a) made a difference or (b) they became concerned that it could make a difference.
Your MP is still a fairly good way to influence policy (and especially just before an election and even more so if you vote based on this)
Writing to the CEO of Toyota Australia, who do some manufacturing Australia but who also spend a lot of money sponsoring stuff eg Afl? to make Aussies like them and wouldn't be happy if all this money appeared to be going nowhere
International law permits killing for scientific research. But they don't really do scientific experiments on it.

you could get car stickers made saying "I drive a Holden because Americans don't kill whales"

Holden would probably fund a few thousand of them...

I'm all for not killing whales...but, the fact is (as Stamp pointed out) over fishing in general is a bigger problem, especially when related to decimating the apex predators populations!

Whaling has the potential to be one of the most ecologically sustainable fishing industries......think about it, you can physically count how many whales are in the ocean, and therefore only take a sustainable about....not so easy to do with sharks, tuna, prawns etc..

Anti whaling is a pretty easy band wagon to jump on!

I get the feeling there is a little bit of something there, Dolphins cruise over unprompted and catch a couple of waves with you before continuing on with their business. On the other hand some people love dogs and others love to eat dogs, it's a crazy world.

spur winged plovers.... no one gives a fig about spur winged plovers, but with every new housing development or worse housing estate, a family or colony of spur wing plovers is decimated.

phuck the whales, save the spur winged plovers.... or is that too much in your own backyard...?

maybe so, but i haven`t seen any farmers bailing their sheep, cows, pigs etc into the corner of the yard and whacking with a piece of 3x2 till their dead.

Thats why abattoirs, the polite name for slaughterhouse, were invented. Hide the wholesale slaughter from view.

yes i know, but that's a bit more controlled and they don`t suffer for as long as that dolphin cull.that's absurd.

I, on the other hand, have seen exactly what you have described... except it was a hammer not a 3x2.

Whale tastes pretty **** anyway. I tried some for breakfast when i was in japan. It tastes (and looks) a lot like liver but with a taste about 5 times stronger that stays in your mouth all day.

I also want to add, people have donated money to the anti whaling organisations only to have them recklessly drive their 2 million dollar boat into a japanese whaling ship and sink it. I would have thought they would have an obligation to spend the money a bit wiser than that. Damn hippies...

What a slap in the face for anyone who has ever donated money...

Well its good to see a wide variety of opinions...
This whole post was brought about because i watched a recent download called ..THE COVE.This perhaps may have been bias but if you get the chance to watch it, have a look.
After doing some research i found That a majority of marine life including whales were subject prone to a slow death due to boats and pollution rather than a minority culling.
There was another interesting article topic about navy sonar.im not going to get into to it.
I posted this on another forum and someone re posted\responded a pic of a wild bore (PIG) being culled and taken down by dogs and stated it was a similar thing.I agreed that ws different but he admittedly said it wasn't.

I think when you look at bias movies like which i did you become one sided weighed down by a equilibrium but having open discussion diplomatically with a community helps me to understand it.
This subject will end up on a Google search and i hope people don't jump to conclusions and read what people have to say.

Japanese people are a very intelligent hard working race i hold a lot of respect for them .Its was not my intention to generalize them.It was a topic that needed addressing from the Australian community.
ref... quote...
In addition to chemical pollution, oil slicks are commonplace in the oceans. Some whales and dolphins in the Western North Atlantic have been surfacing repeatedly through oil-slicked areas. In contrast, gray whales studies off of the Southern California coast changed their migratory path and their swimming and diving behavior when coming into contact with oil patches from seepage. Gill nets and fish traps kill thousands of marine mammals annually.
noise pollution must be considered a significant cause of death as increasing numbers of whales are stranding where sonar testing is being conducted. This is one of the most prevalent dangers facing whales, large and small, today.

I to have been impressed by the views expressed in this thread. It wasn't what i initially expected the replies to be to a thread so titled. Sustainability seems to be what most are agreeing on. I notice how almost every related news report focuss on Japan rather than whaling or fishing. (its never a whaling vessle, its always a Japanese whaling vessle which leads to how do we stop the japanese type stuff rather than how do we improve sustainability world wide type stuff.

@busterwa. if you started to feel like you were bias or had a slightly one sided or ignorant view, rest assured, there are worse.

haha. this is a quote of my currently favourite piece of graffiti. It was painted in large letters along the side of the gold coast highway for ages. I couldn't help but laugh and think it spoke volumes.

SAVE OUR WHALES, EAT YOUR PANDAS.
