such a load of ****. every 4 years all the armchair athletes become passionate experts in obscure sports they know nothing about and don't normally follow.

Yeah it is a total waste of time because of the viewers.

I'd rather get excited about the Olympics than the drug riddled borderline illiterates playing footy. Bit harder to be number 1 when you're up against 7bil people.

To the knockers...it's tradition, something that is slowly fading away in our culture...it's great to see that the Olympics grow bigger each 4 years.

The hard work the athletes put in to get there deserves recognition, not negativity.

I am looking forward to hearing former cricketer Michael Slater give his running commentary on the diving. I think it takes an expert to read off notes and an autocue about a sport they have never been involved with.

the olympic tradition of pitting the best amateur athletes against each other on a level playing field? ahahaha...alive and well. nothing to do with who has the biggest budget or the best sponsors.

tens of thousand living in poverty in london? long term tenants living in befnal green and hackney who can't get access to their own homes because some journo is camped out there now? **** em all! it's more important to throw millions of pounds away to see who can jump the furthest into a sand pit.

that's the spirit hotballs. make sure you get fired up and yell at the tv when our boys in the water polo just miss out on bronze because of a bad referee call.

Speaking of tradition, why doesn't the olympics have a tug of war? That would be an event I'd watch.

Watching any country versus another would be great. Plus it would be an event it doesn't take millions of dollars in taxpayer funds to compete in. In Australia the team going to the Olympics could be selected by a competition going from local to regional to state and then national level.

That wikopedia page didn't say tug of war failed, its just that certain countries dominated the event. Back then England probably won more medals than what it has done since.

Hockey would be a very difficult game to play .

Running along with that stick , it would be so tempting to wack the crap out of your opponent

Or put the stick in between their ankles as they run beside you.

I reckon if it involves running for an hour and half or something, with a stick that is too short so you are half bent over most of the time - it was invented by chiropractors.
Dumb concept.

BTW I think the thing to do is run your stick up theirs so it folds their fingernails back or rips them off. Accidents happen....

I think they should ban athletes in the opening ceremony from filming it. Every single one it seems is living it through a camera. It's like watching Japanese tourists. Just get one guy to do it properly and share it after.

</rant>

I thought the opening ceremony was awesome up to about when the queen dropped in. The whole rural to industrial revolution was something else. Then it just got confusing. Some parts I didn't understand at all.
