Hi all,

I'm planning to move to study full time and work part time, I've good qualifications in health and hospitality fields, my options for study are Hobart, Tasmania or Toowoomba or Fraser Coast in Queensland. Has anyone experience any or both of these areas, what are the pros and cons? I don't care so much about the weather, more work prospects and lifestyle, any useful insight appreciated.

Cheers.

Pick the best course/learning institute. The rest will follow in one way or another. It costs too much to study these days to compromise the best end result for short term interests. If you're studying, you are playing the long game so play it well.

Ive been to Toowoomba. Its a very nice place. We considered moving there. If you mention to QLD people Toowoomba they will tell you its cold but it wasnt, just not as hot as Brisbane. I lived in Brisbane for a year and I think QLD is a brilliant state. Lots to see and do. Toowoomba isnt anywhere near beaches but drive a few hours to some of the best. The Uni seemed ok, my sister was studying there. She is external now but same uni. Never been to tazzy as it seems to cold for me. Dont know much about Fraser Coast. But Toowoombas housing is cheap, plenty of shops, close enough to Brisbane. Its more like a city as its a big town. No cons I can think of.

I have worked in both and spent long periods of time in both due to work, building powerlines and substations

Toowoomba the work there is construction and mining it is booming but mainly as a central destination for FIFO to the coal fields. Closest sailing would be the Brisbane Valley dams which are not great unless you sail a cat . Windsurf and Kite your looking at 2 hours tops to get wet . If your work is hospitality you would only need to know how to cook steak and a B and E burger with barbecue sauce. University is good with good reputation. Things to do on the weekend sink piss and watch the v8 or league mention afl and your out (though you should be studying) . Its a country town so wear lots of RM Williams and know how to put a bet on. Jokes aside if you have a young family its quite good and family friendly with plenty of sporting clubs and what not, but if your single i would think it would be horrible. Weather is mostly sunny with scattered shows and does get cold in winter different to the rest of QLD it stays cold all day . Like 0 in the morning and 10 during the day .

Fraser Coast hands down for Windsurfing Kiting and Sailing little surf some on Fraser Island but you need to worry about things in grey suits especially around Taylor season . It does have a high unemployment rate though. If you are looking into the Hospitality industry you would target the resorts for work maybe check about the islands. Tafe are generally scattered around at Hervey Bay closest UNi would be the Sunshine Coast. Bundaberg is basically Toowomba but with access to really good sailing . Hervey bay sucks a little because its tidal but once you have sussed the area no big deal in fact you would be sailing the same areas if living in Bundy. Night life is rubbish but you tend to live a outdoors lifestyle with the fishing sailing diving ect . Weather is mostly sunny with the odd storm and cyclone its hot and muggy at worst but very mild winter

Tas is beautiful. Plenty of sailing. Cold but good. Great classic boat scene too. The university has a good reputation and Hobart is just the right size.

Lived in Hobart 6 years and studied at utas. It's a pretty cool place to be - particularly if you live central...

It all comes down to the course and quality of the school, not the overall uni. The school I was in had an Austrslian Research Council grant plus industry funding....I.e. The school could afford hearing and a computer
