As an owner of a 1978 type 2, I'm afraid I'm not impressed. It's nothing more than an estate car trading off the legacy of the Kombi.

No sliding doors, no massive load space / camper / people carrying ability. I reckon it's probably ANOTHER variant on the (albeit excellent) Golf/A3/A4/Polo/Octavia/Leon/Beetle floorpan.

Could be that I'm biased because of my love of the original though - and they're never going to build another rear-engined air-cooled VW.

Whaddya reckon? Would you own one (provided it wasn't ludicrously expensive, which it probably will be over here)?

Nah i wouldnt buy one and would probably sell it if they gave it to me. its downright ugly.

Nothing can beat the split window combis.

i saw a type-3 wagon the other day man i wish they would bring a new one of them out. i really like the shape of them.

Only thing missing is a couple of boards bolted to the roof

I had a VW camper back in pommie land.
Amazing for parties, could fit 8 people in, beers smoke and pizza cooking in da oven.
unfortunately the older combis rust out in the UK due to salting the roads in winter and require a lot of maintenance to make it through the yearly MOT (roadworthy).

mine was the boxy 1980s shape......BUT.......

mine was created by a chippie that worked at sunseeker powerboats (you know those multi, multi million dollar power boats in europe).
The interior was lined with some amazing wood, hand crafted wardrobes, storage spaces and even a walnut dash and 4x4ft removable sunroof ideal for 2 mates with super soakers to squirt the passing ladies with.
it also had a mini bar with room for 2 inverted bottles of jack, complete with optics (auto serving measure taps)
it was the don.

I NEED ANOTHER !!!!!

Had a 72 kombi for about 18mths.

Pop up roof, double rear seat, which folded down to a super comfy bed, and full wooden cupbaords throughout. Oh -an Alpine stereo too.

Was a great party wagon and for cruising down south (not to mention shagalicious with the girlyfriends) but waaaayyyy too much weight for it's stock standard gearbox.

Add the usual VW gremlins like dodgy generator (not alternator) etc and i ended up pushing that thing (with a broken wrist - post bike accident) or carting it to my uncle's VW wreckers waaayy to many times. Not made for city driving at all.

When it actually went I loved that wagon.

Don't mind the new "Bulli" BTW. But as mentioned it's a people mover not a Kombi campervan.

At 1st glance it looked like an over grown Mini Copper (new one)

I loved my Combi Van...long time ago though

...and I think I've finally twigged why everyone else who's ever had a kombi spends more time pushing it than driving it, and mine's never skipped a beat (touch wood)...

Mines a panel van so there's no weight in it!

The penny drops...

Why would one purchase a new Kombi, when you can get an old one and quite easily slot a WRX motor into it

13b? never was there a finer use for a 20b!

Long time favourite of mine in the scene here- was never much to look at but god forbid if you ever lined up beside it and wasn't the same old shyte. It has wheelie bars now for obvious reasons.

That porsche powered vid above is a bit surreal, would love to see sabine schmidt do a lap of the nurburgring in that.

It has to happen one day- beetles arent beetles anymore and kombi's wont be kombi's.

I stand corrected 20B it is and a turbo too! im a bit more partial to the NA 20BPP's

I always used to look at my old beetle in my front yard just sitting there begging me to put a NA 20BPP in it but i never had the money and its sold now. but ide just love to do it one day. would be so awesome!

I reckon a type-3 notch back would be the best one for it!

Mate of mine now has my old 12at in his beetle. One of many projects so I haven't seen it run yet- was good for 12's in my old rx-7 should be mad in something half the weight [}:)]. He is a vw nutter, also owns a type 3 Karmann thing.

Truth be told I was never into VW's at all, they are odd (above friend handed me magneto thing one day and it had me puzzled for a while trying to figure out wtf it was). Then I met a guy that was rebuilding up a manx and was around through the build up- he sold me when he asked me to pick up the floor pan & move it and suddenly mmm I want one, so much potential

I'd heard that some of the kombi gearboxes were quite strong, maybe it's just strong compared to the bug boxes.

Anyway back to the new kombi, I thought they had already called one of the transporter things a kombi. That new thing actually is quite sensible but hardly a kombi in err concept.

Don't know about the quote "the worlds most famous van", surely that dubious honour would have to go to the Toyota Hiace, or even the Ford Transit. IMHO both are way superior products. Whose Idea was Air cooling anyway!!! sorry to all those Vee Dub lovers out there but they're great vans (if you want to do an engine rebuild every second year).
