Interesting about the Dunning-Kruger effect. Of course, everybody knows that lemon juice makes you invisible. He was probably using the wrong brand.

They're pickled. They last 10yrs in the briney vinegary whatever it is.
Anyway if Mavis was that desperate for a gherkin, I wouldn't eat it upon return
