This is terrible what happened to Ella. It's rare attacks like these that can discourage children, they here about it and chose to not par take in these healthy outdoor sports. It's extremely unfortunate, the old saying that you have more chance of being struck by lightning is becoming a load of crap.

Attacks are increasing from all species of marine life, perhaps the growing numbers of the protected are out numbering the rest in the food chain. Fisherman aren't helping either, with some not all having a total disregard for regulations.

I've spent many hours at seal island swimming with the seals. They are placid and playful in the water as they are comfortable and know they have the upper hand. But on land you don't want to push your luck, Greenies Photo is as close as I'd go. They are slow and feel vulnerable, they will chase you and most the time your alright, that is until you slip/trip or get cornered.

I've windsurfed out there for many years and was only kiting there yesterday on the NWer. This incident has definitely taken me from complacent to weary.. We can only wish her a speedy recovery and hope that like Bethany Hamilton she continues on the journey.

Lots of seals there!

I have been snorkelling with the seals at Shoalwater several times. Each time the experience has been magic. These creatures are curious, tame and fun loving. This is a clip featured on episode 5 of Local Windsurfing WA - Things to do when its not windy:

No ones laughing. What makes people think that? And if they are that close to Ella I would have thought they knew she was SKURFIN... not SURFIN

The bloke that started the thread said "Imagine this happening while you are windsurfing"
I know because I typed it
I wasnt typing it to say "nah man"
WTF? What is "nah man"?
Windsurfers windsurf in this area and if the other posts were read, it is refering to our local spot which is also swarming with seals
Do seals swarm? What do you call a group of seals? A gaggle? Or maybe a herd?

Big Gill, revise the the thread from the start. I don't think you will be able to quote anyone insinuating this was a funny occurance. It was extremely tragic, it's also one of the only threads I've read on here that all contributors have posted accordingly.

IMO by Greenroom posting he is trying to make everyone aware about a story that could potentially happen to any windsurfer, kiter and surfer due to the similarities in movement and speed on the waters surface to skurfing.

Also don't underestimate the forum about their knowledge on watersports by saying "they don't know what skurfin is". Mate if your 16, then probably 60% of this forum skurfed before you where S***ing green. Me included.

This post raises awareness and highlights other locations to be weary of at certain times of the year.

I'm sure I type for everyone that posted on this topic, in saying we hope she had a speedy recovery and it hasn't stopped her getting back in the water. It's mind over matter and some of these girls like Ella and Bethany Hamilton are inspiration.

Cheers again Greeny

Ella is a friend of my daughter and I took them both surfing on Sat down to Iso's. I can report that Ella has made a speedy recovery and had no quarms whatsoever about jumping back into the surf even though it was blown out and overcast.

Thats good to hear airhead. I had no doubt that a young keen surfer would have no dramas in getting back in the water. Just like Blaster mentioned Bethany. Its people like these two that teach us and inspire us. They are thankful they lived through the experience. It just makes me wanna charge like every session was my last.
We know the dangers of sharks in the water but now that cases like Steve Irwin and the sting ray and Ella and the seal, it just puts us back in our places.
Anywho... be careful out there and keep your eyes peeled for flocks of seals And for the "men in the white suits" in November

yes , this is a very serious situation , rehabilitation .

i remember a story from the old fishing forum , a very tragic story i might add too , from a young and fit talented waterman [ mattb i think ] who was swimming at rockingham when a dolphin decided to take a close look him .
well to cut a long story short this particular creature thought he was just the right person to take a dump on .
after years of theropy our man is back in and on the water extracting revenge in only the blood thirsty way he knows how .

god bless him .
