Hmmm now I can't get even get Aussie sites like bom.gov.au

Like last time my interwebs died - I can only get seabreeze, and it is not cache stuff cos I am posting, reading new posts that only happened one minute ago etc.
I can see IKW's reply.

Seems Bigpond's DNS is broken, it can't find any web site at all.....with IE or Chrome...... but I am OK with seabreeze cos I was already here.

If you still have a problem, point your DNS to Google's. It's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, so give them a try.

How's he going to point his DNS to Google's if he can't google how to point his DNS to Google's?

Not sure why this isn't the first thing you do when things start going wrong?

"Have you turned it off and on again" .... classic from The IT Crowd .... works nearly every time (unless something really is broken).

^^ to my mind if I can use seabreeze the modem and PC are working. Bit counter intuitive to turn off and on but then as I keep discovering: computers are dumb

I thought he might remember it from last time he had almost the same problem. Failing that, he could ask all the friendly folk on seabreeze...

yeah, but turning it off and on clears out any residual cached crap, flushes memory etc.
sounds wrong, but its ALWAYS you best, first test.

I actually believe you in this case. You were on network news (rec.windsurfing?) before, weren't you? So, you must have some amount of nerd in you!

Pics or it aint true...!

An acoustic coupler was pretty hard to come by even in the old days.

Yes I was on rec.windsurfing. No I have never had an accoustic coupler lol but was on dialup until 4yrs ish ago.

I wanted to be the last person on dialup so when they tried to kill it off I'd complain and try to get Telstra to keep it active

Would love to connect with a rotary dial phone and accoustic coupler now and just see what is usable (ie websites) and what isn't

Speaking of old noises - tried to explain to a young'un how "the" SMS tone (that most phones had as default a while back) was Morse Code for S M S

They don't get it....

AFAIK acoustic couplers only went up (it's hard to say that word when talking about such speeds) to 1200/75 baud. 1200 bps down! Imagine how "fast" that is....

Not much would be useable at all. If it was 300 bps, then that's 30 characters a second, and every packet needs 1500 characters, and there's lots of those in a modern web page.. Aargghhh! I have a headache just thinking about it.

...but I am sure for Tony Abbott its a usable speed

WOW,, you guys really are old!!
SMS tone was morse code, we just learnt that in ancient history along with smoke signals.
But you are from WA so even this crazy new idea of "daylight savings??? WTF, how do you save daylight??" is pretty space age stuff.lol
You will be blowen away when you can watch porn without waiting every 5 second for it to buffer.
