Hi,

Heading out to WA in Jan and my hold luggage is taken up with all my kit and it only leaves cabin baggage for boardies ...

Does anyone know whether Emirates and Qantas are like RyanAir and make you put your cabin bag in a metal frame to make sure the dimensions do not exceed their stated size or are they slightly more lenient and go on weight and a visual inspection.

Emirates state 55 x 38 x 20cm (22 x 15 x 8 inches), but most light weight bags are 55 * 40 * 20c

I know it's only 2cm, but you never know with these pesky airlines.

Anyone?

can't comment on the international arm of qantas - but they have not made anyone use those cage thingys to measure their bags on the several flights east I've had recently, despite there being a real need to. And it also appears you can have a laptop bag, a backpack and one of those wheely suitcase thingys as your carry-on goods. No need to worry if you've packed too much, its everyone elses problem that there is not enough space available in the overhead lockers........................yes I'm slightly pissed at the situation given I've always been led to believe you were only ever allowed one peice of carry-on for cattle class tickets and it had to be within the dimensions specified; don't get me wrong - a little bit over who really gives a f..K? but two or three peices well and truly over for one or more of those items - well thats taking the piss. Guess thats what happens with self check in - no one there to regulate or who you can 'sweet talk' into letting you have an additional bag or two checked in above the one bag 23kg allowance at no additional cost

It is rather simple actually.. Ground staff need to pick their fights.

Once upon a time you got dressed up to travel by air. You wore a pair of trousers, nice shirt and a pair of shoes. These days due to the Grey Hound bus level of service and ticket prices, as well as FIFO where you build up FF points just for going to work and back, any body can afford to fly while wearing a Bintang singlet and a pair of thongs. And f**kwits that will pick an argument with ground staff at the drop of a hat. Usually because they 'fly twice a week and they know better'.

I remember those days when I used to holiday with my parents many years ago. We always used to make an effort to look nice and smart. Funny how things have changed
