Does anyone have first hand experience with declaring excess alcohol to bring into Bali. My wife wants to take a couple of bottles of champagne and I've read that the duty can be as low as $6 a bottle. Any advice would be much appreciated
For the price you pay in Bali for drinks, I wouldn't be risking offending the Indo officials over a few bottles of bubbly.
Don't believe that "what happens in Bali" TV show. There are laws and they do take them seriously. ESPECIALLY if they feel you are taking the piss...
Unfortunately the missus doesn't drink beer. There is nothing illegal about taking excess alcohol I was merely querying how much duty I should be paying.
I have on a few occasions taken an extra bottle of scotch in but it has been over 7 years since I last did. At that stage it was a case of having a $20 note at the ready and just handing it to the guy and you would be on your way.
I go to Bali often and checking your duty free bag is the bit they focus on the most, at least it appears that way on the surface.
If it were me I wouldn't try to sneak it through, not worth F**kin up your holiday over, but declare it, offer an amount of cash you're happy with, and be prepared to walk away without the bubbles if they want more. (remember your bags have been x-rayed)
There are a few reasonable wines and a sparkling over there these days, they are not Cheap cheap, but I think they would compare to what you pay here. Don't know how good they are though?

Yeah sorry mitchbat. I misunderstood what you were saying. I don't know the answer.....
Just put the extra in your back pack, show them your duty free bag and you should be sweet,if not they at times will ask for a large amount for the extra but a friendly chat 10 bucks later and your on your way,I travel to Bali up to 4/5 times a year and lately I've noticed they have been less focused on duty free for some reason.
no idea.
but then i don't drink cause i used to drink too much.
i do know my brother and mates lost a fair bit of good stuff as they had too much or something as carry on though.
I don't think they will sell you more than you are allowed to take in to Bali when in the departure lounge, at least not in Perth where there is only one shop selling grog. So the excess would have to be in your checked luggage as liquids are a No No in carry on.
PS I love that you are allowed to take water onto the plane when leaving Perth ( that you bought in the departure lounge) I Hate that you are not allowed to the same coming back from Bali......
