I need a few bits for a footing. The footing is not load bearing and is more ballast to stop people stealing the thing that'll be bolted to it.

Despite not being structural, I understand that a bit of reo is a good idea to prevent it falling apart of cracks start to appear (the "footing" will be about 1200mm long x 500mm wide x 200mm thick).

I was thinking I could just grab an off-cut about the right size and that actual reo type shouldn/t matter too much for this particular job?

Anyone know of somewhere with a bit about that big that is considered scrap? Preferably between Claremont and Canning Vale?

Thanks.

For what you want use anything that is steel and a mesh.

Go to Bunnings and get a bit of weld mesh or even just chicken wire.

Even an old steel mesh shelf, or basket or something. If the wire is PVC coated don't worry too much.

Mesh 25mm x 25mm is about the smallest you want, 100 x 100 about the biggest for that footing. 50 x 50 would be perfect. Wire size anything up to about 10mm

If you use chicken wire (just the mesh fence stuff) you can use a couple pieces one of top of each other on each face.

Don't use a solid sheet of anything - but you don't have to use ribbed rebar steel (- it is really called deformed)

Put it about 50mm from each surface (top and bottom).

I used to design concrete componets for nuclear facilities

They require a slightly different specification

(I would suggest some form of Reo though, even in a mass concrete anchor)

My missus has already noticed that the oven racks are missing - I'll have to think of something else.

Geez mate anywhere that has had a slab laid will have offcuts bigger than that.
Pick anywhere with current building going on, the house n land package websites? and the scrap piles will have heaps.

If you really want ur thing to be un-stealable ...... bear in mind it is possible to chip out around dynabolts or Ramset plugs enough that they give way.

Get your reo and weld up a big square cage. Then weld your bolts to it. Even better, 1ft long sections of threaded rod. Then set the whole lot in concrete so the bolts protrude.

Now it IS unstealable.

Given time, access, and the right tools nothing is unstealable

What you need is a piece of F8 4 bar trench mesh , go to your local supplier ,(google is your friend) , I'm sure they would be able to supply it for a few bucks. Make sure when the mesh is placed in the concrete , it has a min of 50 mm cover of concrete. Air getting to the mesh after it is set will cause the mesh to rust , and eventualy the concrete will crack!. Cast something like this in the conc to lock on to.

Go with Carantoc's advice - simple & effective. You should be able to grab some sort of wire/steel from where you buy your concrete, if not - a visit to an old building site, scrap yard or tip (sorry - transfer station). It's only there to bind the concrete as it expands/shrinks & a small slab like that won't move much.

If all else fails throw a bucket of fibreglass fibres (200mm+ long) into the mix.

It's only there to keep the concrete together and aligned when and if it cracks.
You just need a couple of long pieces of something steel to throw into the hole as you pour.
If it rusts it will expand, this is called spalling, the expanding can crack the concrete.

Chuck anything old metal into it , done plenty of DIY concrete and its not rocket science. under load it requires rio if not just pour 3 bags (individually mixed in a wheel barrow Mix 12 sand 1 concrete. Dump all your junk into a hole and fill...Used it on fence post strainers. Use strings and sand/tent pegs to hold the structure square while the concrete sets. Rio is for heavier loads. Been doing my own driveway latley looks quite impressive..Just have to import acid stain for the states to finish.

HINT Infact there probably a good business opportunity to resurface etch and acid stain driveways in Australia. It's big in America ATM Just need good grinding skills and the ability to work like a Chinese man on your hands and knees allday.I do it to my own house but rather be windsurfing to to it for money on anyone elses.
.

This what you mean ! lol
