Just saw an article on the news on testing of a clever buoy that uses sonar to detect shark movement and alert lifeguards . This is really good news I hope it works and heaps are rolled out . Great for the Aussie inventors and of course water users sharks and other marine animals with the potential of doing away with meshing and drum lines

The "experts" in heavy weather have already knocked the idea on the head, so it cant work if they say so

Seems to me there is an opportunity here to take this facility further. Set up Shark Shields on each buoy with overlapping areas of effect.
The result would be an invisible shield (dare I say forcefield?) This will do away with netting and hook lines.
Cost prohibitive?....what's the cost with the current measures?

No grizzling greenies is a start....maybe

Google + !!! They have to be joking.

Here's the scenario...

Shark Mitigation Systems, in partnership with Google Plus and Optus want you to know that shark has been detected within 10m of your present location. Google Plus indicates you have zero (0) people from your Circles within shouting distance. SMS has sent a message to everyone in your Google Plus Circles indicating your current location and that you will shortly be attacked by a shark. You will receive a 15% discount on emergency medical services if someone from your Circles informs [Hospital] of your imminent arrival.
This message was delivered to you by Optus Telecom and will now be calculated in your message or data allowances. Thank you for being eaten.

Apparently it sends an automatic instant alerts to lifeguards, and then separately shares with scientists and researches in Google+.

I don't think they'd expect people to be checking Google+ while they're in the water...

This system is a good start but here is a even better system right here in Perth that will be sent out for crowd funding shortly. Sadly i'm not that good with technical info but there is a lot that will be put up to show just who easy this could and Will be implemented.

To be honest there is a lot of very good technology out their that is on the cusp of being launched and with costs like $1.2 plus million for 13 weeks of drum lines, these systems will roll out comparatively under that, as once the system is in place it has long term life span.

It will make beaches better protected, but won't really help out of the way spots and i guess thats the concern that many WA surfers seem to have.

But its good to see local business getting involved to pick up the slack
