No helmet

NY has more sensible helmet laws than we do. ie Compulsory under 13 years old, which makes voters think that they are doing something for child safety, and optional after that, except for couriers, which is weird, because you would think that couriers would be more car/ truck/bus aware than casual riders, so have fewer collisions.

Helmets actually have only very slight safety benefits. Like filter tipped cigarettes, you're being sold an illusion

Sold an illusion!!!!!, Crap and more crap. I have a Nephew, still here today becuase he wore a helmet. Observer spotted a car that clipped his rear wheel and drove him sideways head first into the kerb. Helmet saved his life and that was direct from the surgeon who attended to him
People who don't wear helmets, and have an accident, should be costed for full medical, instead of the selfish attitude that ol Joe tax payer will pick up the bill for his her convalesce via medie care.
Safety first in all cases. Wear your bloody helmet, if for no other reason your family will be the benifate of your longer full life.

I don't want to hijack this onto a helmets rant, BUT the stats show a small benefit to wearing helmets. Given that bike accidents are actually not common, a slight improvement is negligible.
As for the insurance thing, I have recently been told that in the UK you get a reduced insurance payout if you are not wearing a helmet. Contributory negligence seems fair enough to me, but only in the case of head injuries. Your broken legs and arms and ribs and crushed organs don't seem to be prevented by a piece of plastic on your noggin, at least not as far as I can see

I rode big dirt bikes on the road for years and was always on the back wheel..

I walked away from the wheelie machines once I'd used up 8 of my 9 lives..
