Woops, a little tougher that the other topic...

Would have to mention the Finns and Crowded House, if only for the number of years they stayed together and world-wide sales. But they're not everyone's cuppa.

Used to like Aussie Crawl, Daddy Cool, and even Skyhooks for a joke...

very early nineties, these guys destroyed the oxford tavern in the gong.. me and my high school buddies were more scared of the cops outside than the berko crowd inside

used to ditch afternoon basket ball practice to smoke cones with guys from school who were from woonona (then catch the bus back home off chops) who used to rave on about this band they watched rehearse in a garage, years later as a cadet at bhp, used to listen to this metallurgist guy in central lab called paul tell stories about playing in a band called...

they would've still been called the proton energy pills back then...they changed their name to tumbleweed after they hit a bit of success.

Spot on Hamsta - had to change due to OS band of same name

Watched them on a double bill with You am I early nineties - I went from a Mod to a stoner and back to a Mod in six months - been a YAI fan ever since

Beasts of Bourbon - started as a swamp supergroup (Axemans Jazz) morphed into eclectic blues / jazz / country band (Sour Mash ,Black Milk) then devloped into a scary thundering crunch of electric blues rock (Low Road, Belly of the Beast)

Here's one from the past - "Ayers Rock" which featured an excellent drummer named Mark Kennedy, who I believe is now playing with Leo Sayer.

Also think that Split Enz really did get their big break in OZ (so we could call them an Aussie band). Saw the original "Enz" when they first came to OZ at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney. Tim and the boys had white face make-up, black & white checkered suits and hair straight-up (included Noel Crombie percussion, Eddie Rayner keyboards). No Neil Fin yet.

Music and appearance certainly was unusual but what a great band!!

I can probably still play every Birdman song from muscle memory (all downstrokes, that yellow box set to 10), but I still think the greatest has to be:

Followed by AC/DC

extra points if anyone can find the Levi Siver scene on youtube with the above soundtrack.

This drags the discussion off in the direction of what defines a good band. Most of the bands mentioned in the thread are in the Bob Dylan mould. Brilliant feel, energy, passion, song writing, etc. Skill at playing instruments?

Ayers Rock were truly brilliant musicians who could play the pants of most other bands at the time, and really rocked out. If you wanted a 10-15 minute blues-rock jam they were the band.

Crossfire were also way ahead of the game in terms of skill and power and innovation.

My most memorable show from the early 70's was a uni gig by Mackenzie Theory. www.milesago.com/artists/mackenzie.htm

The list has to include:-

Jeff St John and the Id

The Loved Ones

Chain

and of course the Great Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs.

They were all producing as good if not better music than the English and American bands of the time.

They just did not get the international exposure they deserved.

Here is Billy at Boggo Road Gaol in 1993.

Live at The Basement doing something really different.

Ummm, that was Stamp who provided the historical details, not I.

BUT, while we are on the topic of Tumbleweed, this gem still sounds great. Appologies for the poor quality of the recording.
