Craig Thompson gets 3 mths jail and 9 months suspended sentence. I was hoping he would get some jail time just for the tall stories he was telling under parliamentary privilege - although he was not facing charges on that this time round. Having said that I did not think they would give him a custodial sentence - but he has.

In spite of the overweening impression of guilt about him, not the least of which was his rambling address to parliament I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I take the fact that he is now appealing the sentence indicates he still thinks he was entitled to pay his brothel bills on a union credit card.
That sort of indicates that it might be standard procedure for the use of union credit cards.
And I take that as indicating he hasn't changed a bit.!!!
On that basis, when the case comes up on appeal I would not be so inclined to suspend 9 months of the sentence and he can do the full 12 months.

How many times have we ever seen a sentence increased after an appeal, appealing is an automatic formality as they can be fairly certain of getting a reduction of some sort.
Anyone watched rake ? Pretty well sums up white collar/ political crime/misadventures in this country and how things pan out . Funny but not funny . Amazed that the guy fronts the media and looks down the barrel and proclaims his innocence .will be interesting watching future episodes.
If you go to independent australia site and wade through the 70-odd posts on the jacksonville saga, you'll see that there is certainly a big scope for him to have been framed. They take a pro-tommo line I think but there's a lot of eye opening stuff in it. I only read some, up to a year ago..

echunda I think you are getting confused with Michael Williamson who was sentenced today to 7.5yrs with 5 being non-parole. He was found to have defrauded the Union for approx. $1 million and enlisting family and friends to cover up his crime.
