I was watching this vid:

And it fired me up to get a handplane and a set of fins when I move close to the beach... rather than a decent surfboard. I've always loved bodysurfing and been better at it than surfing.

Anyone use a handplane? I'm wondering if they're worthwhile.

This site shows some of the variations available and sites to find them

We do a heap of it around here and sell a heap of gear it pays to buy good Fins we all use and sell Dafins they are some of the best i have used. Good hand planes are fun and make making barrels a little easier. If you are looking for any good gear shoot me a message and i'll help you out.

Cheers Jacko

I'm struggling to see how a handplane would be a benefit in the surf.

Good for carving on an edge and coming out of a bottom turn planing. Boom boom!

I made me and my mates handplanes out of offcuts of paulownia that I had left over from some board building projects, they only took about 40mins to make so if figured it was worth a try.
I have a bit of a belly so am not the most hydrodynamic of individuals, the hand plane gives me that extra bit speed along the wave that is missing when going conventional.
I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot.

Or for the lazy individual, use your old surferjoe thongs ( you know the multicoloured ones with slopy sides so they don't sink in the sand)

Wear em to the beach , take one out for a couple of pits

Only prob is as they get old they get way to much rocker

There used to be an orange plastic model available.

There was ongoing conflict at City Beach in the mornings from the old timers who would body surf in the traditional manner going straight and arms to the side versus a couple of guys with flippers and a hand gun.

The older guys would be ten or more to a wave and the hand plane guys would cut across them and used to end with a fair bit of agro.

Dont really need one going left but I should get one to see if it makes going right easier as I end up down the bottom of the wave.

The pod ones are a third of the price of the timber ones, indestructible and made in oz. they also perform a hell of a lot better. Tried both so.....

Yeah the pod is the original.

The bloke shares a factory with my mate, cool dude been into his bodysurfing for ever.

His wooden ones are sweet, bought one for my old man or Xmas.

The fins are pretty good also.

Dunko what did you mean with swellnet? They talk about handboards in the forum? I had a quick look but couldn't see anything.

This is some sweet bodysurfing with Dafin fins (like paul.j recommended) and no handboard.

Dave,

The cover shot for today is a sick barrel with a guy sliding through it on his gut.
Don't know if he's fallen of his surfboard.

It's a great shot!

Bodysurfing is so much fun. I used to go out to places like suck rock at cronulla and other ledgy barrels, with fins and hand board you can make some decent pits.

Also great when its jus way too sucky to surf

Get involved

That is an awesome pic.

Don't get me wrong, I have been bodysurfing all my life, but never with fins or hand board. I'm now moving to within 100m of the beach and I'm looking to step up my fitness a bit (approaching 40 and getting fat working in a chair all day), I reckon a morning swim/bodysurf/surf would be a great way to do that (along with the odd weekend/avo kite).

So far from this thread I reckon it's worth the investment of a pod board and a pair of fins - not a huge amount of money to gamble compared to kite gear.

These boards look awesome but I'd try a cheapie first I reckon, have to be committed to spend that money..

Years ago a mate had one and I gave it a go. My conclusion was that he's wasted his money.

If you can already body surf then you don't need one and it doesn't really make it any easier (it's not like body surfing is difficult anyway). I much prefer my surfboards. At least with a board, you've got something to sit on between sets. :)

Do not buy a hand plane, they are very easy to make, all you need is a hand saw, block plane (or rasp ) and sand paper.

i love surfing BUT when its a serious shorey or sucky ledge you cant paddle into body surfing is great!! yes i often just go without flippers and hand boar but when the condition are on you can get some serious wave and barrel time on a hand board plus you can make make some decent pits.

wood $20
hand saw $30
bloke plane or rasp $?
sand paper $5

or

hand board $60 and this includes strap and leash and no time to make? and you know it will work.

sure if you want the satisfaction of actually making something you can use go for it.

^^ I'm with DunkO on this one - if I had lots of time and not much money I'd make one.
But currently I work a lot, earn decent money, and am going flat out all the time.
I can barely juggle home/car maintenance, work, family time, sleep, trying to find time to kite every now and then, posting crap on here.
I'd rather just buy a hand board and fins, if I don't like it I'll sell them on Gumtree and I've blown maybe fifty bucks. It's a cheap experiment at that.

I have an old thruster, a 6'2" T&C board made in hawaii. Needs a new leggie and there's wax keeping some of the dings watertight but I'll still use that some times too.

I don't really like the sitting round on your board between sets to be honest, I'd prefer to be kiting - up and riding all the time not doing all that work and sitting round waiting for a tiny pay off. I'd also prefer to be swimming - more connected with the ocean, less boring, and also getting more exercise. Surfing kinda feels like the worst of both worlds some times - but maybe if I actually caught more and better waves and stayed up longer then I'd feel differently.
