Speed Etiquette
Big day at Budgie yesterday, lots of sailors, a few near misses as different directions being sailed. I was wondering what are the right of way rules on a speed course. I am thinking common sense says;
1. Look before you gybe.
2 Look all round before you bear away.
3. Make a noise if you see someone sailing near, they may have seen you but just as likely not.
4. Make a noise if someone is in front & likely to gybe in front of you, doesn't do any harm.
5. Those going upwind try to keep clear of those bearing off.
5. Starboard prevails over port if on different tacks.
6. Upwind ought generally keep out of the way of downwind sailors. You may be bearing away & going for it but the downwind bloke has limited options to get out of your way & may not see you.
7. If you are sailing back & forth accross the wind, the speed course bear away section may not be the best place to do it.
Any thoughts?
