Mast to mast and a half, 25-30 knots of side-off wind, and no crowds because of a P.W.A. contest going on on the other side of the world to top it all off. I pulled up to Hookipa(Nov. 15) and saw Josh Stone frantically rigging and screaming that it was the best he has seen it in years. Usually when the swell gets over mast the channel closes out and Hookipa turns into a bumpy mess with currents running everywhere. This day was different. The sets were lining up at middles and peeling down to the point. There were still the big closeouts that worked more then a few unlucky sailors but most of the waves were rideable.
Before going out I moved my fins back on my OES quad 72 to help the board drive on the bigger waves. The board is still very loose, but the added holding power really gives you the confidence to drive a bottom turn when it’s big. By moving the fins backward and foreword you have more versatility then you could ever get out of a single fin or a twin.
It was one of those magical days. As you can see from the pictures it was epic. There was enough waves for everyone and we were all smiling and hooting at each other. What a day. Winter is starting off great so far, pass on the stoke.
