International Cadet World Championships 2011 were held at the German seaside town of Kuhlungsborn, on the Baltic Sea, from 27th July to 5th August.
For the second year in succession, Victorian brothers Anton and Julian Sasson have finished in the top three placings at the International Cadet world championship.
Last year they finished second overall in Poland, this year they have come in third overall at Kuhlungsborn, Germany, against a crack fleet of 75 crews, with Europeans dominating the results.
Anton (16) and Julian (13), who hail from the Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne, sailed an excellent regatta that saw them only once out of the top twenty boats in the 11 heat series. Their last three races included a second and a third.
However, they could not make any real impression on the Polish and Russian crews who filled the two top placings, with the overall champion being decided on a countback. The Polish crew took the title with five wins.
Australia had two crews in the top twenty, with the young Tasmanian crew of Jonathon (15) and Thomas (13) Cooper from Sandy Bay Sailing Club finishing 17th overall, despite having to carry 76 points from a DNE (disqualification not excludible). Their last two heats saw a seventh and a third.
Another Sandy Bay crew, Oliver Burnell (14) and Sam Abel (11) finished 28th overall and sixth in the 15 year old division. Ashleigh Dyer (16) and Georgina Hughes (14) from Port Lincoln Yacht Club in South Australia finished 30th and fifth placed all-girl crew, despite being called BFD (black flag) and disqualified from the final heat.
Samantha Bailey and Hannah Chadwick from SBSC finished 38th overall, while two South Australian crews, Sean Keen and Oscar Mitton from Adelaide Sailing Club and Cameron Philcox and Cody Groat, from Largs Bay Sailing Club, finished 41st and 42nd overall.
The next International Cadet world championship will be held on Hobart's River Derwent, hosted by Sandy Bay Sailing Club in early January 2013.
The club made an impressive presentation at the German event and, as a result, expects a large international contingent for the world championship.
