Recreational anglers can now enjoy improved access to a popular fishing destination in Gippsland, thanks to the installation of three fishing platforms along the Tarwin River.
Using $150,000 from the Recreational Fishing Grants Program, the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority has installed the platforms between the township of Tarwin Lower and the Tarwin River Bridge. This is the seventh platform funded by this program.
Accessible by wooden ramps and gravel paths, the platforms extend over the muddy banks to provide access for anglers of all abilities.
The platforms have received tremendous support locally with ongoing maintenance of the sites undertaken by the Shire of South Gippsland and community groups.
Prior to installing the platforms, fishing access to the Tarwin River was limited during times of high river levels. To maximise fishing opportunities at each site, the platforms feature timber seating and angled handrails, which provide a stable rest for rods.
Since its inception in 2001, the annual Recreational Fishing Grants Program has funded more than 240 projects throughout Victoria worth more than $8.5 million.
