Big Board Build
I'm embarking on building a large volume wave board.
Something for 2-4ft summer waves that can fill the gap between sup and float and ride.

the boards will be built as prototypes only. I have a couple of ideas to try with different volume distribution and tail shapes.
the obvious issue with this type of board is the sheer size of the board making it feel slow and heavy in turns. That's something to try and solve along the way.

the first design is wide style. i'll build that first then take a hand saw to it and reshape some areas. Along the way i'll be getting some help from a local shaper.

the board is very large. 2320x678x138 135lt quad/thruster.
once the board is built and surfed i'll cut a fish tail into it.

the shape is nothing special. just the usual stuff on a board the size of your linen cupboard door. I know a few guys on here have built some big boards. my local shaper has 120lt quad that works great but this is just that bit bigger.

feel free to have your say. it's an idea being explored. negative or positive I'm ok with anything you have to say.

LeeD please don't wreck this thread. this is not a board for skinny old men.

Building a board
Hey guys,

so over the last few months I have been really interested in trying to make a board. I have been looking into it a lot and looking at designs, fluid dynamic, rockers, volumes, lengths, fins and how it all affects a board. i have been thinking of making a retro looking volumed quad fish..... now i know its probably not the easiest board to make but i just love the old style and speed you can get out of this sort of board. it suits my favourite beachy i ride and i have some time to kill over the uni holidays.

i have a few questions for those who have dabbled in it a bit (im trying to keep it as less problematic as possible)

- should i buy a pre shaped blank? e.g http://www.surfblanksaustralia.com/shop-online/shop/machined-blank-pdf/fish/50-fish-401-402-403-404-405-406-407-408-409-detail

- whats resin tinting like? im fond of bright orange

- have you used rice paper printing to put images in under the hot coat?

- should i put fin boxes in or make my own fins? i know it wont be easy but i feel like they would be nice to look at if it rides like mule when i put in on the wall

im sure i will have more questions when it comes to dishing out dollars in a few weeks but that's kind of my concerns at the moment. i figure the less shaping i do on the first blank the better and the less to go wrong.

cheers,
mitch

Board build stoke
Just finished and rode my 2nd backyard board. 5'9x21 epoxy twin fish. Pretty stoked with the results
Had few different hurdles to overcome such as a split stringer length wise. Not sure if this was the blanks fault or my ****e planer skills but in the end had to fill it with resin hence the blue resin tint through the middle ( also helps hide my messy glassing ) . Template from blending curves, alot of info from sway locks and everything else by eye/feel.

Any one else got some backyard boards they're stoked with?
