I got to go for a quick paddle on the new Starboard 14'8" SUP today, Thanks to Sam @ Wind Surf 'n' Snow. She certainly is a beast.
Conditions: Windy (10 - 12+ knots), choppy, limited swell maybe half knee on a good one.
First impressions: That's one huge Bi**h. Definitely looks the part, nice pulled in tail. Weight was ok, not as heavy as I thought it was going to be.
Paddling: Very stable. @ 27" wide this board is very stable and easy to balance. Volume is good. I felt the stance was possibly a little too far back to keep lined up with the rudder, but I am 95kg, it could be different for lighter riders. The rudder system was a little to stiff to use for quick inputs, I like the sound of the shockcord system that they use a lot on Maui, however it did definitely work. I felt that the board had too much rocker/nose lift, but lowering this would make it harder to paddle. Speed was ok and it did catch some pretty small runs, I will have to have another session before making my mind up on this. I would imagine in big swells and gnarly conditions this board would be great, but it's not as racey as I thought it was going to be.
I will try and get out again with another SUP to cross reference. Possibly tomorrow if I can get out for lunch.
Here are some pics I took at the beach.

JB
