After a recent sad incident in Queensland, we wanted to take the opportunity to remind you to keep in mind key safety considerations when kiting.

A kiter died earlier this month whilst kiting alone between 500 and 600m offshore in Morton Bay, QLD. Conditions were reportedly challenging with 20 - 25knt winds and a large swell. There were a number of kiters, including KA Members, that came to his assistance after he had already passed away. This event has greatly affected the family of the kiter involved and many members of the community. Investigations are still ongoing into the incident.

This email highlights a few key safety points. Please think twice every time you go out and make sure you are looking after yourself and those around you.

Always kite with a buddy

Kiteboarding in an unpredictable sport and even when you think you are totally in control you never know what could happen. Having a buddy near you, who is looking out for you and able to render assistance quickly is an important way to ensure you are likely to come out of any situation well. Don't rely on the fact that other people will be out nearby, make sure someone is specifically looking out for you.

There are lots of facebook groups for local areas where you can find people to ride with. Alternatively, check in at your local store to find a crew heading out.

Always follow the C.L.E.A.R guidelines

C.L.E.A.R stands for Conditions, Look, Equipment, Attitude and Respect.

These are 5 key factors to ensuring that you are safe and also that kiters don't get into or cause issues on the water.

Conditions: Check the wind, currents, waves and tides
Look: Look before you launch, land, jump or change direction
Equipment: Use the right equipment and check it every time
Attitude: Seek and listen to local advice
Respect: Respect people, the law and the environment
