Gybe Master Competition
Rules are easy.
to start new fun we could count how many times we did gybes , tacks or beach starts in half and hour and multiply it by total distance made at this time ( 30 minutes)

GM= Gybes x Distance (km)

For me yesterday it was

JP118L,8.0m2,fin 37.5

GM= 21 gybes x 8.62 km = 182.28

Whole idea of this matter is find an index that will appreciate your gybing or tacking skills.
Suggestion and modification are welcome as this is just first rough proposal.
BTW it is not intended to compete with alpha 500 but rather complement.


I think that calculations could be easy automated by computer if this index get some popularity.
For example programmer could count instead of gybes amounts of consequential vector direction changes with additional setup filters that min speed must reach ... 10 km or 15 km/h every time after turn to counts.
If feedback is positive we could ask nicely our great Dylan to calculate GM every time with KA72 records upload.

There should be one more category in our GPS Team challenge competition.

Beach starts/ water starts doesn't counts.

Or even more complicated formula something like

amount of gybes (tacks) x average speed on the turn

For obvious reason nice , fast planing gybe is more "valuable " then making turns on the Starboard GO carrier.

Right, I've worked out windsurfing has many challenging facets, and one that's stressing me a bit is planing gybes. How long did it / or should it take to pull them off with consistency- like 80 percent plus??

Currently I'm up to building good speed, get more on a slitghtly down wind run, adjust rear foot for the big power turn, keep all my speed through the arc (say a 20 metre carve), be in the right position for heading the other way, flip the sail around then Sail flips around fine, feet tangle, board points near verticle, total stall and the obligatory dunking

Please tell me they're hard and every one takes ages to learn them

Got to tell someone...I cracked 8 planing gybes in a row today..( 10 all up).... Prob never happen again with I had someone with a camera....
Boy I love my 95 Rocket with a 4m sail!

Had a big session today and It got me thinking...Not only that I'd forgotten to put sunscreen on my feet but how long I'd spent on the water. Once I got my data from my GPS I had sailed for a total time of 5 hours and 11 minutes, Other then a quick sail change this was one complete session....I'm going to have to invest in a camel back for the summer. I wasn't powered up all the time, A lot of slogging but I covered 45 km in the 5 hours.
