Do you identify Australian flag with racism?
So I seen this guy on Q and A the other night state that “racist bigots” in Australia have led him to identify the country’s flag with racism.
It really got me thinking and actually struck a chord with me...
“There’s so many racist bigots in this country and they’re everywhere… The Australian flag to me… I now identify that with racism,” Colwell said during the episode. When asked why he aligns the flag with racism, Colwell responded, “On Australia Day you see a bunch of dudes walking around with their tops off, they’re getting on the drink, they’ve got an Australian flag wrapped around their neck, I’ve seen it so many times.”
Now I never thought too much about the national flag when I was younger , It was just the flag....
But as I realised more and more about symbolism and what flags represent to different people , yeah I agree with Matt ,
This flag is been tainted by extreme nationalism, crass commercialism and it is a rally flag for racist and bigots....
And once something is tainted its hard to get clean again.
Take the union jack for example, Its generally waved by people who are been patriotic (they think) but often racist,
Loyalists in Norn Iron, BNP people hating the muslims in cities in England etc. Seems the same thing is happening here..
Is this flag flawed and outdated in its design?, should we just bin it and make a nice new one? , like the Canadians for example.
Interested to hear what you think fellas.
