Getting back into sailboarding after 20 years!
Hi
I used to windsurf along time ago ;)
I grew up on Lake Macquarie and enjoyed the summer north easterlies back in the late 80s on boards like the Windsurfer one design, Mistral one design and Bombora south pacific.
I have a boat nowadays but still miss the sensation of planing on a reach at what felt like high speeds :0
I'm 173cm and weigh 85kg.
I was thinking of getting back into it, I don't want to head out into the surf but would rather have something I can sail upwind on but is as fast as possible down wind as well. I notice a lot of boards don't have dagger boards, I assume they are wave boards which are mainly for reaching ?
Can anyone tell me what sort of kit I should be looking for in the second hand market or if I was to buy newish gear. I am totally out of touch with the current gear. I live in the inner west of Sydney now.
cheers

What was your first board?
Mine was a Sailboard Australia Fun Freestyle. It sounds quite horrid but it was a good board. Nice pink colour. Based on the One Design with a retractable centreboard and some footstraps. It came with two colourful mylar sails. One about 6m and a storm 4.5m. My parents bought it for me when on a holiday to Port Stephens back in about 1984. Very generous of them.

Its just like this one on eBay. Brings back the memories, that is why I'm posting this.

Orthogonal Concept

I have a "classic" that has a black label in the middle saying:

Orthogonal Concept
292
Tom Ludecke Design

It's a white PVC board. Sturdy. Very sharp rocker lines. May be between 125-135L.
Bougth it in 90-ties.

Is that a Bombora? Has anyone heard about it before?

I just broke 4 PBs with it, so go easy on the insults

Feeling nostalgic for 1986?
Cleaning out underneath the house the other day and finally came to terms with saying goodbye to my gear from 1986 . In the picture is a Bombora South Pacific (which weighs around 15kgs), a custom fibreglass board made by a local sailor Russel McCamley with 90degree rails the entire length of board, a Gaastra 5.8 Speed Slalom sail, a 4.5 North Slalom Spider (by D Ezzy), a plastic Multi-fin from Byron Bay with the mother of all chord widths and two very narrow tie-on booms.

Brought back many fond memories and made me realise I had lost 20 precious years that I had given the sport away.

Also found this press clipping from Dec 30 1986 of me sailing the custom slalom board and gaastra sail - the most carefree days of my life just after finishing school and before starting uni. Tried to defer uni so I could sail forever but alas my dreams were cut short.

Apologies if I have bored anyone to death with my reminiscing.
