There's a few things we need to do before Australia Day can really ring true.

1. Have an Australian head of state, not some fossil on the other side of the world.
Last time this was put to a "referendum", it was sabotaged by a monarchist PM by offering the choice of a/ the current system or b/ this stupid option that everyone hates rather than a simple "republic: y/n" question.

Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten are both for it.

Our new Australian of the Year is for it, and would make a great head of state.

All of the Premiers are for it.

More than half the population are for it, when it's a simple yes/no question.

It's time to stand on our own two feet, surely.


2. New flag. The need it obvious - a quarter of our flag is the stamp of dominion of another country. Perhaps we can reclaim if from the "F Off We're Full" bogans at the same time. (If you don't think they own it now, consider why most corporations wouldn't put aussie flag or southern cross on their products now unless aiming at a certain market segment).

NZ is doing it now.

Canada has an awesome flag.

The only commonwealth countries with the union jack left are us and some tin pot islands - everyone else has p!ssed it off already.
