John Saffron Balsa Wood Board - A Piece of Australian Surfing History Can Be Yours.
Firstly, Disclaimer: I am 90 % certain this is a balsa wood board. If anyone can tell me how to tell for certain I would welcome their advice.
The thing is, I have one, Ive had it for 25 years. A neighbour picked it up from the Walkerville tip because they thought I might like it. I loved it, so I kept it. I've ridden it a few times over the years and ridden it tandem with a hot chick just so that I could say I did. It's not an easy board to ride but it certainly has style.
By my best research it would have been made in the late 50's it was definitely made by John Saffron in Whittington Geelong. I've never seen another one nor have I ever seen another board of its age outside of a museum. It has had a colourful life, it was my coffee table for years, it's been shot more than once, had a hole drilled in it's fin (Sorry I'm no swimmer) and been repaired more times than it cares to remember. I have attached a few photos.
Now 25 years is a long time and it has come time to part ways. But I would like it to go to a good home and this forum seemed like a good place to start. If anyone can point me in the best direction to sell it that would be great. Alternately if anyone would like to make an offer, reasonable offers will be considered. (Please don't insult me with "I'll give you $200", I can be short sometimes). Whilst I am aware the only other one I know of was for sale in Geelong for $3000, I don't know if it was sold and I suspect it was in better condition.
Thanks Heaps,
Jade
