Yes, I can clearly make out the letters "JD", just like AI can.

But perhaps AI is wrong. John Deere gear is green.

Very interested to know what caused your long swim:

A mast failure or a front wing departure?

Also, where did the police launch drop you?

Don't know about welding, but the two I've seen with cracks have been pretty much identical so they may not progress further..????

- Well, if a metal starts to crack, the crack will progress under the same load, until catastrophic failure (usually in the worst place, out at sea?).

It may well have been like that for years.
- Agreed, a S-L-O-W crack OR it's just started and been spotted.

I did swap mine out though. Maybe someone else has more insight about it??

- If you did swap it out, maybe cut the area affected in two, so as to see how far the crack has progressed. If you do that, I'd suggest you let Mark Oz know.

If you think about the turbine blades in a jet engine, they are swapped out as soon as the crack is spotted. Different applications, different loads, same result at failure.

Gestalt asked : got me thinking whether brass screws for the brass inserts would be strong enough.

By experience, answer is no.

One of the local sailors who knew absolutely nothing about the technical aspects of windsurf boards (but could sell pastries as his normal job), used brass screws on one of his boards after a SS screw failure and they failed under load almost immediately.

Some years ago, I was told by a professional wetsuit repairer how to safely store wetsuit contact cement so that it lasts for ages. For the following technique, I'm using Gear Aid Aquaseal + Neo Contact Cement, but whichever make you use, note how it's shown on the display rack in the store. In my case, the product was hung vertically, nozzle down
.
Open the pack such that the pack can be reused, but can still contain the cement.

After repairing the wetsuit, carefully remove any remaining cement from the nozzle and its threads.

Refit the nozzle cap.

Replace the tube of cement in the original package.

Place the package in the fridge, in the same position as it was in the store. In my case, it was nozzle down.

I placed the package in the "normal" part of the fridge, in the fridge door, at the top.

The cement just gets cold, but doesn't set.

To use the cement, take it out of the fridge and let it get to room temperature.

By keeping the cement in its original pack, the "kitchen owner" will not be tempted to use it on food being prepared.

I've just repaired a wetsuit using the cement I've had in the fridge for over 12 months. The nozzle cap unscrewed easily and the cement flowed easily. Worked perfectly.
.
Hope this helps.

AusMoz asked: Just out of interest- was Nicole Kidman in it?

Yes, it was Nicole, as per the credits.

Having spotted all of those windsurf-gear features, after a bedroom romp, I also spotted that she had a very nice posterior.

For those of you who missed this film last night, you missed:

A young Nicole Kidman.

Fiberglass wave boards.

Mast base within about 2ft. of the front of the board.

Single and tri fins (probably no toe-in on the outer fins ).

Tie-on boom.

Drop front boom.

Deflection of the aluminium boom arm as it came under load.

Pure rope as the harness line.

Rope harness line ends being AT LEAST 2ft apart on the boom

The hero using a wave sail having 3 and a half battens.

Said sail beating a 5-batten wave sail in a race.

Bright sail colours.

Fully rigging a sail whilst up to the hero's neck in water.

Fluro wetsuits.

A wild seal kissing the male hero when he fell into the water.

A young Nicole Kidman.

Yes, I have a lot of time on my hands.

Closest I could get is at Surfsail WA here: www.surfsailaustralia.com.au/product/goya-footstrap-stainless-self-tapper-28mm#surf-sail-clothing-hardware. Airbag could be an option for you.

However, the screws are only 12 gauge (5.5mm) x 28mm long. You may have to reduce the diameter of the current footstrap holes to fit and I recall there have been earlier posts on how to do this.

If you are screwing into plastic, make sure the thread is described as PT (Plastic Thread) which is a coarser thread than self tappers.

Starboard used to have a selection of non-standard footstrap screws some years ago, but I couldn't find them on their current site.

Hope this helps.
